It's been so long since I vlogged, and since there is always great interest in the TED gift bag, I decided that, rather than just posting a description and photos, I'd do a video unveiling. So here it is, it two parts:
So to all the organizations who donate their products to the gift bag, let me extend a hearty thanks! It is clear you all believe in the TED mission, and it seems some donations are made after the CEO or founder personally attends TED and comes to understand its true impact.
Now, I want to make a comment that is in no way a reflection of the TED staff, who I know work incredibly hard to make this event happen. It's in pretty much every conceiveable way an extremely high-quality event. That said, going through the gift bag gives me the distinct feeling that the recession has come to TED. I wondered if I would see any impact of it here, and the gift bag is a big indictation. It looks like sponsors were less generous this year. And when I think about it, that is the right stance - so many companies are facing harsh financial realities and laying off thousands of people. (How many layoffs in January in the US? Almost 300,000, and that was just the large companies?) So I for one am glad the gift bag doesn't have the material "oomph" it's previously delivered. Seems fitting and the right thing to do.
